Overview

Ascend ("we", "us", "our") is a study platform that helps students organize class materials and generate AI-powered study aids. This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

What we collect

• Account info: email address and display name (via Google or Microsoft sign-in)
• Study materials: documents, notes, and files you upload or import
• Study data: flashcards, quizzes, and progress generated from your materials
• Usage data: page views and feature usage to improve the product

Chrome extension

The Ascend Blackboard Bridge extension accesses your Blackboard LMS pages to extract course names, assignments, grades, and announcements. It also accesses Mediasite pages to extract lecture transcripts. This data is sent directly to your Ascend account and is not shared with any third party. The extension stores sync preferences locally using Chrome storage. It only activates on Blackboard, Mediasite, and Ascend pages.

How we use your data

• Generate flashcards, quizzes, summaries, and study plans from your materials
• Organize your courses and track your study progress
• Improve the product based on aggregate usage patterns

What we don't do

• We do not sell your data to anyone
• We do not share your materials with other users (unless you choose to)
• We do not use your materials to train AI models
• We do not show you ads

Data storage

Your data is stored securely using Supabase (hosted on AWS). All connections use HTTPS encryption. Row-level security ensures you can only access your own data. Files you upload stay on your device unless you explicitly sync them.

Third-party services

• Supabase — database and authentication
• Anthropic (Claude) — AI processing for study material generation
• Google / Microsoft — OAuth sign-in

AI processing is stateless. Your materials are sent to generate study content and are not retained by the AI provider.

Your rights

You can export or delete your data at any time from your account settings. If you delete your account, all associated data is permanently removed within 30 days.
